As I become the President of the Illinois Chapter of the APWA, it is hard not to look back at where I started my career in Public Works. I started in 1983 working as Highway Commissioner for Blackhawk Township in Rock Island County. The job was really not so different from the Municipal Services General Manager position that I hold today at the City of Moline. Both have required continuing education to stay current with changing laws, evolving techniques, and new products and equipment. Having served on the educational conference, I can tell you that there is always something changing and that the Spring APWA Conference in Peoria has something to offer everyone in Public Works including our friends in Township Government. This year we have added special discounts for Commissioners and County Engineers to encourage them to check us out and kick the tires, not as an alternative to their associations but as an added extra value. I look forward to seeing past attendees again this year and serving as your President! This year I will be focusing on growing IPWMAN and our Chapterís memberships.
